Annual Maintenance Tips For Windows & Doors

The spring season is a great time for homeowners to begin doing some much-needed maintenance around the house, from spring cleaning to fixing up winter storm damage outside. Spring is also the perfect time to perform your annual window and door maintenance, to ensure your fenestration is in great shape for the year ahead!

1. Check for damage

First, you’ll want to make sure your windows and doors don’t have any visible damage. This can include damage to weatherstripping, as well as damage to the exterior and interior finishes. Be sure to inspect and address damage by re-sealing exterior caulking.

2. Secure loose screws and hardware

On first look, you may not be able to tell whether your windows or doors have loose screws or hardware. Take a close look at the interior and exterior of your doors, and test the screws and hardware to ensure that they’re still tight and in proper working order. Have a screwdriver handy so you can fix any loose screws.

3. Clean your windows and doors

Dirt, dust and debris buildup on and around your windows and doors isn’t just unsightly — it can also lead to damage. Check the hinges, sills and tracks for buildup, and vacuum or wipe down any dirt you find. Once you’ve done this, be sure to check that your windows and doors still open and close smoothly. If they don’t, they may require some additional maintenance by a professional.

4. Be aware of shifting

Changes in the weather from season to season can cause shifting in your doors, but it’s important to understand that this is perfectly normal. Shifting can cause doors to get too tight in the summertime with all of the excess moisture, but most doors will have adjustability in the hinges and sills to accommodate. If you can no longer open your doors, this may be the sign of a bigger problem that will need to be addressed by a professional.

5. Follow maintenance instructions from your dealer or manufacturer

The most important part of window and door maintenance is to follow any maintenance instructions provided by your dealer or manufacturer. Since windows and doors come in a range of styles and materials, your particular windows and doors may require specific maintenance each year. Pay special attention to the types of cleaners they recommend to ensure you don’t damage the glass, wood, aluminum or other materials.

Your windows and doors may have certain tolerances and limitations. Your dealer and manufacturer will be able to tell you what to expect from your product in terms of natural wear and tear or colour fade.
